2060 Olympic Location Announced
Don't know how many of you are world sports fans, but this is too cool not to post.
I have a friend on the Olympic committee and....
It's Official, Japan will be hosting the 2060 Olympic Games!
Reports on news nets about this should be showing up within the week.

I feel bad for anyone trying to use public transportation over there during the games...
It will be interesting to see how this effects the Japanese economy.
Lots of short term government spending and jobs... I hope they build more hotels.

rome
I find it extremely unlikely that they will have the ability to finish any major building that would be built in response to this knowledge. I think it is safe to say there will be no new hotels in japan specifically for the olympics.

Perhaps you are unfamiliar with the history of Olympic development. Whole cities have risen (and fallen) in response to a successful bid to host the competition. The Olympics are always substantial news, and substantial money - regardless of the side of the moral fence upon which one finds oneself.

Japan's Ultimatum
Can't we all just get along? No? Well then can't we all at least COMPETE with one another?Newsnet Feb 29th 2059 wrote: There was outrage today as Japan announced that it would NOT allow Metahumans to participate in the 2060 Olympic games. Only baseline humans would be able to apply due to "concerns for the purity of these hallowed games."

I'm disgusted and outraged!
...Though not terribly surprised...
This is thoroughly depressing.

Since when does the host country get to dictate the rules...? I'm not up on my sports regulations, but I'd just move the damn games somewhere else. It's like people are determined to piss each other off these days...

actually...
From what I understand the host country can ban other countries and even gets to choose which events will compete and which will not. That's been true for a long time now.

just dont go
I hope the UCAS decides not to participate under the ideal that if one of our team cant compete then none of us will. This is the sort of thing I just cant stand. I am going to go break something now.

There have been widespread protests, and even announcements of boycotting the games if the Japanese government maintains this policy on metahumans. So it's a start.

again...
There are always protests and threats of boycott at the Olympic games. Can't say I've ever noticed it changing anything.

Japan's leaders are proud and will not be swayed by protests over seas.
I haven't noticed any news about protests in Japan over this.

Games Cancelled
Due to mass boycotting by the athletes and countries involved, the 2060 Olympics will not be held. Guess, the people made a difference after all, eh?

HOW THE HELL IS CANCELLING THE OLYMPICS A WIN?!?!?
Some people not being able to compete was crippling and unfair
No one being able to compete is devastating
So thanks dumb fucks of the world. Way to be crabs in a bucket!
Don't you just love the attitude of "if i can't have it no one can" ?

Perhaps the modern world has no place for a series of competitions based upon physical speed and strength alone. I would propose that a more fitting competition would be for the world to pit teams of Shadowrunners against one another... But of course, I have a vested interest in such a suggestion, especially where prize money is involved.

the new olympics
Originally the Olympics were a series of events that showcased the physical strength of your citizens because military might was based on the physical might of ones solders. If you showed well at the games people would think twice about invading your country.
Now a days the physical abilities of ones people play less of a roll in modern military combat. I say we reinvent the Olympics games to reflect this change in martial power. To this end I recommend the following events: the 1000 mile relay (the baton is now a missile convoy), supply line maintenance (must keep 1000 men fed for three weeks 100 miles deep in enemy territory), the ICBM barrage, ICE breaking, ECM hide and seek, and the 20 mile snipe.
I'd watch that and, more to the point, I'd think really hard about invading any country that did well.

Desert Wars
They do have something like that... not an OLYMPICS persay, but the corps perform in the Desert Wars, and it is on the trid. It takes place in what used to be Libya in the desert that was the result of the 10 Minute War. It is essentially televised skirmishes between corporate security forces. They go out and take all their fancy toys of death and go at it. Lets them strut their stuff and still say "Don't frag with me." Good times.

ooh. I sense...
Road trip! Are their live spectators or is it too dangerous to be within 20 miles. And where are the rules posted? Any prizes involved or just bragging rights?

Desert Wars
Spectators are not allowed... course if you want to sneak onto a live fireing range that's your funeral. The rules are not exactly posted anywhere. You have to be apart of one of the participating corps. Though in general, as long as there's no chemical/germ warfare, almost anything is fair game. Oh, no nukes, no Thor Shots. Some chemical stuff might get used under the table, but since the battlefield got all irradiated during the 10-minute war, personnel generally have chem-seals on their suits.
First: bragging rights is a big prize unto itself. Second: the chance to field test all sorts of deadly toys without the need to use ones own facilities. Lastly: military contracts. The corp that does the best in the desert wars tends to get the fattest military money. Prize enough.

still a need
No spectators?! That's no good. And we still need to satisfy national pride. My call for a new revised Olympics for our modern world still stands.

Seconded. Particularly if there's some manner of long-shot event.
